Hi guys, Seeing as it's the international lounge... the bestselling Russian PA author Alex Bobl has got himself an English-language blog with some gorgeous illustrations to his books. Here's one to get you started: The blog itself is here: boblak.blogspot.com/. The English translation of some of Alex Bobl's books is expected to come out this summer. He's most popular for his Technotma: The Dark Times series of eight novels set in a totally post-apocalyptic world (the blog illustrations give a good idea of it where the Black Sea has turned into a major desert. He's also an ex special-forces man which allows him to write up all the military bits with considerable expertise - I'd personally call him the Russian Chris Ryan.

There seems to be a new urban myth that Russian hard men will dominate a PA scene. As in Brennan for example where they drive the emigration of Europeans to England.
Not wanting to be chauvinistic but I an reminded of the words of Pirrie in Death of Grass,
"I had not meant that the English are inhibited from violence. Under the right circumstances, they will murder with a will, and more cheerfully than most. But they are sluggish in logic as well as imagination. They will preserve illusions to the very end. It is only after that that they will fight like particularly savage tigers.'"

Great quote, although I'd personally say that what drives the English is their spirit, not illusions. A Rudyard Kipling of new PA fiction is yet to come? "Mother Rodina" - I love it Having said that, this Russian Alex Bobl author is apparently in the process of translating his latest standalone novel, Memoria, into English, and he's just posted the first chapter in his blog. It's set in the US, if it's any consolation Russians have long arms, you know! Here's the link to the chapter: boblak.blogspot.com/2012/03/memoria.html

Thanks for these links. Interesting stuff.
And Russian PA definitely seems to be a growing and long may it continue.
In terms of other European PA I know that the French have a tradition. There were also a rash of very bad Italian PA films in the 80's which have a bit of a cult following now but it would be great to hear of any others from the continent.

But if the bushcraft and survival forums are to be believed we have countless numbers of ex SAS and other toughie military chaps lurking in woods all over Britain so not to worry.

They say there is quite a growing number of former Spetsnaz getting comfy in Londonistan and New Yorkabad these days We are very welcoming in London of the worlds global baddies And lets be honest, our entire history is nothing more than really being the biggest organised crime 'family' in the world.

Bushcraft and S do seem to attract pimply forty something's with bad breath and a knife polishing kit. They would find silent hunting in the wild difficult until they learn to breathe through their noses. But then I am prejudiced after being banned from a forum.

That's what I love to hear. The English way is to allow the worlds billionaires to come here. We then encourage them to send their children to our most exclusive private schools and within a couple of generations they are fully integrated. As long as you leave all that kidnapping and tit-for-tat murdering back in your homelands then we welcome you with open arms and are more than happy for your ill-gotten gains to end up in the British banking system. Biggest money laundry in the world.

Bobl some time ago and now he's reposted it in his blog. More art there! Also, I like what he says - none of that "inspired author" attitude. Very down to earth. boblak.blogspot.com/2012/03/interview.html

Voroshilvov before the revolution in the early 1900s would read futuristic fiction and dream of cities of glass. He went through what we could call an end of time with Reds and Whites and even Greens chasing each other over the Steppes while the country collapsed. Now we have people living in cities of glass and they dream of chasing around in the Wasteland!

You Brits and your sense of humour! ;D I could stay here all day just "listening" to you Sadly, its not actually funny. If you really want to understand the UK and its history just take a look back to Elisabeth the 1st. She inherited a Throne that was burdened with debt, that had pissed off the most powerful nations on earth and which was generally seen as an upstart of a nation that needed a good hiding handed out to it. So she effectively legalised piracy and encouraged our brightest and best to go out and pillage. And its never changed since. Ignore all the pomp and so on, the UK is and remains perhaps the single biggest and successful criminal enterprise in the world. We might not be the most powerful in terms of military anymore but where ever there is trouble in the world, and a few quid to be made, then we are up to our perfidious little noses in it. Which continues to this day. Russia and its people have been robbed and ripped off to the tune of billions and a very large percentage of that has ended up in the British banking system along with many of the people who did this ending up with British passports in their pockets and their kids going to our top public schools. So next time you see a Royal Wedding splashed all over your media and some daft period drama just remember that its being bought to you by the people who put the Mafia to shame.
