Zombies may not have anything to do with PA books etc. but I tried for ages to interest a good friend of mine in Survivors to no avail. She's now hooked on The Walking Dead and I can cheerfully point out the similarities. OK, to be honest I would prefer the zombies hadn't gotten involved, but after years in teaching, I know sometimes you just have to take a roundabout/indirect approach to get people interested. Or just to get people actually reading! I have to say that "reading" The Walking Dead was my first experience with a graphic novel and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, though I'm not about to make a permenant switch. Guess you can actually teach an old librarian new tricks.......

The second series is underway in the US and they have just returned after the odd winter break they have with their TV schedules.
And the first episode back after the break is in pure PA territory. Top show.

Have now watched two episodes of series two exciting in places and does seem a good watch. Will stick with it. Zombies OK and add something to the tension. Awful lot of talking and unsure why survivors would have a gunfight in a bar when one party could stroll down the street to have a pub of their own.
Who is the bloke that lives in a tent and doesn't want to participate? Tents seem a bit risky with wandering hungry corpses about.

Thats Daryl the redneck survivalist, a really good guy on a downer at the moment because he spent loads of time and got into loads of scrapres trying to find Sophia the missing little girl, unfortunately it turns out she was one of the Zombies kept in the barn.

I usually tape Walking Dead and watch something else so I can see it and speed thru the commercials. Can't help channel surfing to Walking Dead on the commercials and last night happened upon a scene in it surprisingly reminiscent of the "Law and Order" episode of the original Survivors-deciding someone's fate with capitol punishment as the only punitive method.Don't know how it worked out and don't know the name of the episode but it's about the 4th ep. in the second season. Curious to see how it works out....

That Law and Order episode raised the issue of what you do with people who are different. There was an anomaly in the episode in that he said "not hurt rabbits" yet he had an arrowhead with blood on it?
But what do you do with the community "burden"? Find them as useful a work as possible and as in Earth Abides prevent them breeding? Can't exile the criminal either. I suspect that for very small groups the answers might be for them to move away from the problem, that would be the 2012 western solution.

Been catching up with things on this and having just watched episode 12, its all certainly taking a darker turn. Liking this more and more and the writers are certainly not scared of making things take a dramatic turn, along with portraying some very complex characters and actions.

Daryl the redneck is becoming my favourite character, he oozes cool confidence with a touch of humanity thrown in.

Just caught up with the first half of series 3 (once again this bizzare US break half way through before it resumes in February).
And once again top stuff. Really well done, brutal and with a willingness to kill off major characters. Good storylines, complex characters and a real example of how PA can be done.
A must see for anybody with a love of the PA genre.

Hoorah for the Black Lady, great survivor. Weird that nobody seems to have shoved even some mustard and cress seeds in the ground, or a wet flannel. No sprouted mung beans either and certainly no spuds. Easy to plough a field, chain a load of Zombies to a plough and keep walking away from them.

.....Weird that nobody seems to have shoved even some mustard and cress seeds in the ground, or a wet flannel. ......... Why would you want to shove a wet flannel in the ground? ;D Feeble attempt at humour aside TWD is very good, helped in no small measure by the strong character development.

First Zombie story may have been about Jason of Golden Fleece fame who planted dragon's teeth that ripened into skeleton fighters which was a difficulty for him.

Watching series one for the first time. I see that the Walking Dead get more stupid as we progress. Second episode some are able to pick up rocks in order to break the glass in a department store window and climb neatly over a chain link fence. Last episode so far in most recent series has them just wandering dummies taking no positive actions. First series even a little zombie girl picks up a teddy bear which would have given massive satisfaction to the Governor had his daughter done the same.
