One of the things that I liked about 'Day of the Triffids' was that at the end it jumps to how things might be some 5 years later.
If my memory serves me right it mentions a trip into London and that the characters say that its almost impossible to carry on doing so due to buildings collapsing and roads being impassable.
Driving around London as I do every day I have noticed that its only taken a bad couple of months for almost every road to be full of pot holes and the like and thats with them being actively gritted and so on which makes me wonder if a 5 year period, in a post-apoc senario, would perhaps be too generous a figure for survivability of the road network.
That maybe after 2 or 3 years the roads would be impassable to anything other than the most sturdiest of 4wd vehicles.

In terms of negotiable routes we might be back to the ancient ways literally. For example the Wiltshire Berkshire Ridgeway and its close cousin the Ickneild Way.
Would be an interesting exercise to plot what routes would be available and to what traffic. And how to find your way in second growth scrub and forest.

Two communities agreeing to maintain a stretch of road between the two of them might be the begining of the restart of some sort of organised Government.
