www.gutenberg.org/etext/376That is the text for Daniel Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year. Not universal disaster but a group "bug-out" of London to the woods. Used to live next to Epping Forest and would"play" it or Day of the Triffids among the trees. Imagine, aged 11 and we were tooled up with air pistols and sheath-knives and whatever else including matches and maybe a bottle of cider. How many police and social workers would that bring knocking on the door nowadays? We might even have bought glue from time to time! Edwin

Another one on the list to read.
As to your antics in Epping forest, well I doubt kids are even allowed in the place on their own these days.

Will soon own my own tiny bit of woodland in which I intend to light campfires, shoot my air pistol and bow and arrows (at inanimate targets!) and see whether I can still enjoy the life of Bevis/Felix Aquila.
I also hope to conduct some Living History experiments following my interest in Prehistory and wild food foraging. Shall be teaching an Expedient Bow workshop in April at a Bushcraft meet.
if a child can light a fire, rustle up water and food, shoot a bow and paddle a canoe then they are prepared for the Post-A as anyone could be besides which these sort of activities should be the right of every child to enjoy and ones they would find for themselves if parents and Society would step back from them. Who knows it could even help to end the alleged problem of obesity.
