Matthew has touched on PA in the Mediterranean and there are obviously authors writing material all over the Continent, we have heard of some of their works here.
From this forum's title we can think of PA in Britain in small terms, never more than something like 70 miles from the sea etc. But my question is whether PA writers elsewhere capture the challenges and opportunities of nearly infinite space.
American writers do, probably because of their long tradition of Road novels and movies along with the emigre traditions of the western moving pilgrims. For me, many novels set in the past can be read in PA terms. For example, Louis L'Amour's western To Tame A Land is of a boy growing up alone on horseback with a gun and a book of ancient history, practically a perfect PA scenario which we have seen repeated in parts of PA novels.
In Europe we have, from just my readings, books like Dmitri Donskoi and Quiet Flows the Don, that have that feeling of space set in a troubled past but without that sense of personal empowerment we get from the American equivalent such as The Red badge of Courage.
Personal empowerment being such a strong theme of the PA novels we are more familiar with in the UK and America. Any titles please?

Thats a really interesting point Edwin and I have never really conisdered that before. I suppose the Western does have an element of a PA to it (or is it actually the otherway around ?) and that the US experience is perhaps different given the distances involved. I would guess that in European PA then perhaps only Russia offers the true expanses of nothingness. Will have a look out for that Western book though. It has piqued my imagination. Thanks.
