.22 will be the way to go, it things go belly up. With the amount of stuff around, you would do yourself a favour learning to shoot the stuff. If at the mo you don't.

As long as one did not get the .22 target rifle a friend had. Heavy barrel, single- shot, bolt-action, incredibly accurate. Just one fault, if it was loaded with the safety catch on and you pulled the trigger it would fire when the safety was released. Lethally dangerous but amused us until it was fixed. Wouldn't mind the repaired gun now.

Apologies, it was a BSA Martini action .22, Model 12 possibly.

I think a foil, epee or sabre used to good fashion would be the most stylish of weapons. Guaranteed to strike fear in both gentlemen and non-gentlemen alike.

Try one of these for amusement but DO have a good backstop. It will surprise you the first time you shoot it. I have this 50lb and the 80lb self-cocking version. Enjoy shooting them, one in each hand. Phrases like "I warned you to be out of town by sun up" and "Die you foolish crustacean from Alpha Centauris" come to the lips. www.amazon.co.uk/Plastic-50LB-Crossbow-Pistol/dp/B00AVZFSF6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1358673414&sr=8-2I actually got several of the 50lb which were going cheap with the idea of creating a Zombie apocalypse shooting gallery to complement our Have A Go Archery but while I can insure the archery for public liability not so for pistol crossbows so will probably sell on the surplus. (NOT trying to flog them here!)

Until you came up against a non-gentleman with a flintlock pistol and who was beyond your reach, at which time you could become a very stylish corpse.

One shot might be all he needs, and who is to say that's all he's got?

What the well-prepared person needs for their 12-bore. An array of inserts for the 12-bore barrel enabling many different calibres to be fired. Not terribly accurate but better than nothing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l4PBOQT1dgIf one kept to smooth-bore inserts and did not acquire any bullets I suppose they would be legal to get in the UK.
