I've always had an interest in these sites and consider myself fortunate to have served in the RAF during the 80's when I was able to access some of the bigger bunkers on various Taceval exercises. I also managed to visit two bunkers which have since been converted to museums. If you haven't been, try: www.secretnuclearbunker.com/ in Essex, and; www.hackgreen.co.uk/in Cheshire. There's also one in Scotland, www.secretbunker.co.uk/Local to me (Lincolnshire) are several ROC stations and RAF Skendleby Rotor bunker (in private ownership).

I haven't visited the Scottish bunker but we were fortunate enough to visit Mistley in Essex before it closed to the public in 2002. Mistley was my favourite and I remember thinking what a great base it would have made in the event of an apocalypse. It's a shame when these places fall into private hands, they form an important part of our history and should be preserved as museums.
