"THE Quiet Place" by Richard Maynard has astronauts returning to Earth to arrive in the distant future.(Boulle's Planet of the Apes...) Crash land off the coast of France and come ashore to be greeted with devastation and decay. Savages roam the land with only the memory of "Noel" having any meaning. Eventually return to England via collapsing "Chunnel" to establish themselves and try to teach the inhabitants more advance hunter/gatherer skills.
A youth drug had been place in water supplies around the world just after astronauts departed but it had been derived from a contraceptive formula. End result was near sterility and only a few retained fertility to create offspring. With only children in the world who was to teach them? Devolved to savages with a tradition of a children's feast "Noel".
Interesting story with a "GreyBeard" taste...
