haven't read all the replies to the blog but if we count novels then we have to go back to at least Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe or even earlier to Boccaccio's Decameron. Themes of disastrous plaque and our heroes isolating themselves as to general PA I suppose the sundry flood stories from Gilgamesh to Noah are the earliest.
