www.peterheller.net/the-dog-stars/This American PA fiction is the debut fiction book for Peter Heller. This book was a good read with the protagonist Hig living in a world desolated by a super flu. It is nine years on from the disaster and Hig lives at an abandoned airfield, still flying his Cessna. There is one other person there with him, firearms obsessed Bagley. Due to developments Hig flies off to find out what else has happened in the world. THis book quite lyrical in parts when Hig is ruminating. The flying sections are great if you have an interest in aviation. There is a believable PA world with no zombies, magic or other silliness. For Hig it is a fairly cosy catastrophe were a rugged man can use his skills to do well - Wrinkle in the Skin, Alas Babylon or Day of the Triffids come to mind.

I've just finished reading this myself and I thought it was great. One of the better novels of this type I've found for a while. You're right about the realism too - nothing too unbelievable. There are a few periods where not much happens but the book doesn't feel like it's dragging, and there are two or three scenes in particular that are brilliant.

Thanks for the heads up. Putting this on the 'must read' list.

Just ordered this as well, secondhand as usual. Have to build up a stock of hard copy PA for one of our sons when he visits at Christmas. Too easy to get them on Kindle but then he can't read them.
