Mike Carey is a UK based comic book writer, for US and particularly the UK 2000AD series. He has written some other books that seem mostly in the horror genre however I have not read them. Bibliography here.
The girl with all the gifts is a bit of a zombie book however I would suggest I don't like that genre but did like this book. It is a good deal smarter than the standard zombie fare with a more fleshed out (see what I did there) world with a more intelligent explanation for the zombification process.
The story draws elements from Death of Grass, Triffids with a small group seeking refuge in a hostile world. Great characters, good action and spookiness.
Although I would not normally recommend a zombie book this reads difference from others of the genre. It must be fairly popular as my local library had a copy.
