Years ago I read a description of an archetypal cosy PA book. It was something like this
"After the catastrophe I shall stumble around and enjoy the empty world, soar into the sky in a helicopter, then meet a few people good and bad and settle at last in a cottage on a hillside with my true love, living on the fruits of the Earth."
The Day of the Triffid sort I really like so no surprise that I still want to read one with a similar feel but with boats and the sea. Any suggestions please?

Kraken Wakes and Wrinkle in the Skin both end like this however no helicopters involved. Kraken may be the closest with the protagonist traveling down the flooded coast before returning to his hilltop home.

Kraken is good and the description of motor-boating down a flooded London Street "in a waking moment" along with the description of the man visiting near the end in a dinghy are great writing.

Interesting points but the definition of middle-class must be much wider than normally recognised because I liked it. However it is possible that many of those who read the "escape" fiction of the Thirties moved over to Cosy C. Sort of books they read were Good Companions and some of Delderfield's where a middle-aged man goes on the run and has cosy adventures.
I am looking for similar but "wet" books.

For those in Peril on the Sea by Colin M Drysdale and its sequel are nearly there, except for the zombies.

Have you read Long Voyage Back? It is years since I have read it however I recall it being quite good www.amazon.com/Long-Voyage-Back-Luke-Rhinehart/dp/1557501300PA in the sense of a conventional war but What Happened to the Corbetts by Nevil Shute is a great read with a prescient view by him of what bombing of civilian targets would be like in WW2 (he wrote it in the 1930's). The family escape their ruined suburban home for their yacht and sail down the UK coast to France. Have you read 200pound Millionaire? A great wish fulfillment dream about living on a boat form the 1930's: www.woodenwidget.com/milionaire.htm
